Delphine and Solange Garnier are two sisters living in the small coastal town of Rochefort. One a dancer, the other a composer, they both dream of finding love and moving to Paris to make their respective careers. When entertainers Étienne and Bill come to Rochefort for the local fair and lose their show’s dancers, the sisters jump on the opportunity to secure a ride to Paris. Love might be in the air for the women of the Garnier family during the weekend of the fair, but it may take some more detours to finally find it.
Director Jacques Demy creates a pastel-coloured musical teeming with youth, love and summer. Always remaining light as a feather, but without losing its mischievous sense of humour, The Young Girls of Rochefort are able to entertain, without losing sight of the real world horrors of life. With its expertly choreographed musical sequences, this classic of the French New Wave was a major influence on modern hits like La La Land.
