In a dark and grotesque yet fascinating world, we follow a mysterious soldier who sets out on a mission to plant a bomb. From the moment he descends into this postapocalyptic world in a diving bell, he serves as a guide through whose travels we are introduced to this hellish place. On his journey, we encounter numerous bizarre and grotesque creatures, some are fearsome and of great power and some less so. Due to the soldiers’ frailty, we feel a sense of constant danger but also curiosity while touring this cruel and puzzling realm. It is truly an unsettling and, at the same time, most fascinating experience to witness the infernal world of Mad God.
Phil Tippett, while being involved in making RoboCop 2 and Jurassic Park, first stopped working on Mad God since he believed that the days of stop motion were over. However, 20 years later, continued the project with the help of Kickstarter and many volunteers. Thirty years after work began on Mad God, the Project was completed in 2021 and premiered at the Locarno Film Festival the same year. The creators of Mad God masterfully use the possibilities of Claymation to create a world that has its own distinct dark style and narration. It very much seems as if a mad god had created the world we see.
