The year is 2019. After the destruction of Tokyo during World War III, the Metropolis Neo-Tokyo arose from the old cities ashes. Schoolboy Kaneda, member of a biker gang, and his friends are confronted with zombie-like children. His friend Tetsuo gets taken away by the military, because of his godlike powers. Tetsuo loses control and Kaneda feels obligated to intervene. Can Neo-Tokyo be saved or will it be doomed and go under in a futuristic inferno?
The late 80s anime has long been claimed as a cult classic and favorite by many. The futuristic design of the city, a mix of old and new, is visually hypnotic in itself, intertwined with a very energetic and capturing story. The speed, the cyberpunk technology, the uncertainty, all grab the viewers and pull them in an alternate futuristic past. All in all this movie deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell.
