1969, the Vietnam War has reached its climax. Captain Willard receives an assignment from the Secret Service: to kill a former high-ranking Green Berets officer. The ex-colonel, Kurtz, has indeed gone crazy. At the head of a legion of like-minded people, he wages a war that defies every order. Willard is assigned a small boat with a crew to reach Kurtz’s base. Their path takes them through the hell of war.
Coppola’s depiction of the Vietnam War reveals the deepest moral points of humanity. Apocalypse Now is therefore a drastic depiction of the cruelty of man after he has lost his values. The hallucinating end and collapse of civilization.
