Iris is a shy new “temp” at a sterile credit company. Quickly taken under the wing of cynical office veteran Margaret, she joins her and the other temporary workers Paula and Jane in a routine of stamping letters, copying files, and watching the clock count down to 5 PM. They are regarded as corporate outsiders, hired by days, fired by whim. In this numbing environment, their friendship becomes a silent rebellion, until a series of office thefts turns colleagues into suspects.
Pre-dating the cultural phenomenon of The Office, Jill Sprecher’s Clockwatchers is a criminally underseen gem of the workplace comedy genre. The film treats the office structure itself as the subject of dry, deadpan humor. Visually, the aesthetic is surprisingly bright, with clean camera work and vibrant 1990s colors, ironically contrasting the crushing weight of what we now call “bullshit jobs.” Far from mere deep and depressing social commentary, the movie is a biting comedy about workplace alienation, petty humiliations, and the quiet dignity found in unexpected friendships.
