Balduin, a student, strikes a deal with the devil. He gets a fortune in exchange for any object in his room. The devil chooses his reflection in the mirror, which soon starts causing havoc in the city. Unable to enjoy his new wealth, he must confront his dark reflection and fight the devil. Mirrors multiply the world, and our reflections meet our gaze with theirs. The Student of Prague shows a dark reflection brought to life with impressive and haunting special effects.
The silent film is set to music by the three-member ensemble Menschenstoff, which uses extensive unhelpful apparatus for fantastic purposes in order to create artificial life in the musical laboratory, which is of course only possible in the presence of the devil.
